The alien Quozl that Foster created are fascinating. Their culture, philosophy, social hierarchy are unique and very fun to read about. Even their ponderously slow method of space travel and colonization is interesting which allows for a proper introduction into who the Quozl are as a race. It is only when they begin to interact with humans on a grander scale do I lose interest in the narrative. The transition from hidden secretive race to media sensation is too rapid and unrealistic. Which is where my opinion really skews the book. I don't believe humans would react in the way Foster has written them in this book. The process is too peaceful. You could make the argument that this was the intention of the author. This may very well be his idea of how things should go if ever there was first contact with an alien race. But, to me it feels false. Granted this book was first published in 1989 and Foster might write this story differently if he had penned it today. Also his premise that sex is the primary reason for war on this planet is a bit simplistic at best. This idea is hit repeatedly over the head for the reader in case you could somehow miss it. Which you can't because there is no chance for subtlety on this topic.Overall I did enjoy the book but it wouldn't make it to my "must read" list.

Only a few pages in and I'm hooked on a new species. Can't wait to learn more. Characters are "real" and the first person style drew me in.
I find that Mr. Foster has a wonderfully warped imagination and sense of humor! I enjoy his many books, in particular the Flinx series. The only author I can think of with as wide a range of characters is Piers Anthony whose books I also enjoy (Cluster series, Xanth series for their horrible puns which I loved!) I have read nearly all of Mr. Foster's books and enjoyed them all!
I think I read this book first when I was 13 and thought it was hilarious. I was worried when I re-read it as an adult that it wouldn't hold up but it did. I wouldn't recommend the book to someone that young normally but it didn't scar me in anyway. It was funny with great characterization and thought-provoking.
This is a highly entertaining romp of a story! Although it is clearly fantasy/science fiction, the scenarios it paints are delightfully plausible and the characters "true-to-life," although some of the humans come across as a bit one-dimensional (perhaps on purpose). The scene at a famous amusement park had me laughing out loud. This was my first encounter with a novel by Alan Dean Foster and I will definitely be looking for his books in the future.
I have to admit, as an avid SF reader, this was only the second Alan Dean Foster novel I've read - my first being his novelization of Alien, which was very good. However, I heard mixed reviews from some SF-reading friends of mine, so had avoided him until I read the description of this novel. Once I started, I looked forward to every opportunity to read every chapter! It is not a "serious novel" in the sense of some SF epics, like a lot of Clarke's, Herbert's or Asimov's, but it is still very well thought out, giving an excellent perspective on essentially intelligent rabbit off-shoots from another solar system.
If you are looking for a smart, fun SF novel, you can't go wrong to read this novel. I will definitely be reading Foster in the future
I gave it five stars becauee this story desrrves five stars. I was guided visually , emotionally, and entertaingly to a new concept on Aliens. It was humorous and thoughtful at the same time. A really great read!!
Oh Joy!!! A new favourite author to read. I realize that he has been writing for years but I just discovered him and this stand alone sci-fi book is a great introduction to his writing. The idea of large intelligent alien rabbits landing from outer space was so intriguing that I had to download it immediately. It opens up with a large, long dose of the Quozl and their culture and beliefs. Very well done. Complete in depth world building. I wish that he wrote a volume 2 about the eventual return trip to the Quozl home planet.
